What To Look Out For When Hiring A Mediator

Sep 30, 2022 | Blog

Going through a separation of any sort can be stressful, but when you have to find a mediator that you can trust on top of that, it can be extremely overwhelming. However, when you know what to look for in a mediator it can make the process a lot easier!

First thing’s first, DO YOUR RESEARCH! Find a firm that specializes in the type of mediation services you need, and read reviews! Look for experienced mediators, who know what they are talking about and have a long list of successful mediation cases they performed.

Look for a mediator that is skilled in active listening and empathy. Mediators are an unbiased opinion, they should be able to empathize with both parties and listen to the needs of everyone. Their body language, how they help explore the issues, and repeating back to you what is being said will be great factors to pay attention to.

Your mediator also must be patient and tactful, regardless of who their first client was. They should focus on the problem rather than blaming particular individuals or losing respect for one of the clients, as that will sway the outcome and be a waste of time for everyone. Like the saying goes, patience is KEY! So is respect! Being friendly to everyone will set a good example and help keep the peace during a mediation.

Mediators must have excellent communication skills, they must have a clear objective of both parties coming out winners, and they have to be creative, to help find a positive outcome for everyone. They also should be good at character reading, being able to work with different types of individuals and taking the time to get to know who their clients are – ask a lot of questions.
